Cheru Parippu Payasam- Split yellow moong dal kheer – Lentil pudding with coconut milk and Jaggery

It is that time of the year again , where all the festivities have marked it’s start and it’s my favorite of the year . The recipe which I am bringing today is a payasam/ pudding made out of lentils , jaggery , coconut milk and ghee. The lentil which I have used here is split yellow mung , also known as cheru parippu in malayalam , pasi parippu in tamil or split yellow moong in hindi.

I am bringing this delicious dessert to you all during this auspicious time of Navaratri. “Navaratri is a festival dedicated to the worship of the Hindu deity Durga. The word Navaratri means ‘nine nights’ in Sanskrit, navameaning nine and ratri meaning nights. During these nine nights and ten days, nine forms of Devi are worshipped. The tenth day is commonly referred to as Vijayadashami or “Dussehra” (Wikipedia). In Kerala (A southern state in India where I come from), we celebrate the last three days of Navaratri as a Saraswathi pooja ( Saraswathi is a Hindu Deity & Pooja means prayer ) , where books are worshipped and they are taken out for reading & writing after the pooja (All facts are adapted from wikipedia)

I have made this indulging pudding using all the good ingredients ; lentils, jaggery, coconut milk and ghee . This is such an easy recipe to make with just few ingredients put together and trust me your entire family will love this . You can make this vegan by substituting coconut oil instead , still it will taste delicious without ghee in it . The wonderful aroma of this pudding while you make it is so tempting that you might want to eat it hot off the pan . Now let’s get into how to make this tempting pudding

Ingredients
  1. Yellow Mung – 1/2 cup uncooked
  2. Jaggery (Grated or chopped into small pieces )- 1/2 cup
  3. Coconut Milk- 1/2 cup (I used freshly extracted coconut milk, check in the notes how to do that )
  4. Ghee- 2 to 3 tablespoons
  5. Cardamom- 2 pods crushed
  6. Chopped cashewnuts- 1 teaspoon
  7. Raisins- 1 teaspoon
Instructions
  1. 1. In a pressure cook the yellow mung till it is soften and mashed . If you don’t have a pressure cooker , you can cook this on a stove top but you need to cook for 20 minutes or till it is mashed up .
  2. 2. In a pan place jaggery and 2-3 tablespoons of water , in medium heat let the jaggery melt . After the jaggery have melted strain it to remove impurities , place the melted jaggery back in the pan.
  3. 3. To this jaggery add the mashed lentil and cook till it thickens .
  4. 4. Reduce heat to low and add coconut milk to it , give it a good stir .
  5. 5. Now add crushed cardamom and cook it till it thickens
  6. 6. In another pan heat some ghee fry raisins and cashew nuts, keep it aside
  7. 7. Add this to the cooked payasam and one or two tablespoons of ghee for flavour .

  1. How to extract fresh coconut milk
  2. 1. Blend one cup grated coconut and half cup hot water in a blender , then squeeze out the milk using your hand

Boli /Kerala Style sweet lentil flatbread

Boli is a dessert made out of all purpose flour , split bengal gram (channa dal) and sugar flavoured with cardamom and nutmeg powder. It is normally served with semiya payasam ( vermicelli and milk pudding ) during weddings and festivals. Boli is a sweet item very famous in southern kerala ( my home province) especially from the city of trivandrum (capital of the state). Usually serving boli with payasam is a match made in heaven like a beautiful couple . I can eat so many of them with or without the payasam . Since it is served with another sweet pudding boli is mildly sweet.

Boli is also made in other parts of India too with slight variations in the recipe

The Boli which I have made here is stuffed with cooked channa dal and sugar rolled out into thin rounds then cooked on a griddle without burning , finally it is smeared with ghee ( clarified butter) to give that wonderful aroma.

Ingredients
  1. Split Bengal Gram- 1/2 cup
  2. All purpose Flour- 1 cup
  3. Rice Flour - 2 cups
  4. Turmeric powder- a pinch
  5. Sesame Oil/ Gingelly Oil - 4 tbsp
  6. Sugar- 1/2 cup
  7. Cardamom Powder- a pinch
  8. Nutmeg powder- a pinch
  9. Ghee- as required for smearing
Instructions
  1. 1. Soak channa dal for one hour , then drain and with enough water to cover the dal pressure cook it.
  2. 2. Place both all purpose flour & rice flour and a pinch of turmeric powder in a bowl . By adding water little by little make a smooth dough it has to be sticky not a stiff dough. Keep it in the bowl itself covered in sesame oil , this will prevent the dough from getting dried up . Normally gingelly oil is used , since I couldnt find it I used sesame oil from asian store .You can also use coconut oil here but avoid using olive oil.
  3. 3. By this time the dal will be cooked , take it out strain and keep it aside
  4. 4. In a pan take this cooked dal , a pinch of turmeric powder and sugar.
  5. 5. Cook this mixture on medium flame for 5 minutes or till it becomes smooth and bit thicker . Then add cardamom powder and nutmeg powder . If the dal is not mashed enough you can pulse this in a food processor for a minute
  6. 6. Make balls of this lentil mixture which should be almost the size of a golf ball
  7. 7. Take some of the all purpose dough , flatten it out using fingers into a tiny round shape and place this lentil balls inside
  8. 8. Seal this by covering the entire lentil ball with the dough . Make sure you seal it very well
  9. 9. Dust this dough with some rice flour and slightly flatten it using fingers1
  10. 10. Start rolling this out , you can dust rice flour in between if needed
  11. 11. Roll it thinly , not too thick or too thin. If it is too thick you can enjoy it well , if itis too this it will break easily because of sugar
  12. 12. Heat a griddle and cook like cooking a normal roti/chappati
  13. 13. When it is cooked it will have brown spots on the sides . Then smear both sides with ghee
